Initial Vista Impressions

Kelsin

I like it. It won’t overtake Linux in my book, but I enjoy using it. A lot more than XP. XP felt like a ugly skin on top of 98 and 2000. I didn’t feel like anything was changed under the hood (Of course this can’t be confirmed cause we can’t see the SOURCE). A lot of user features were added (like new “programs”) but it didn’t feel different. Vista does. Thank god they finally have a nicely named C:\Users folder! The file explorer is excellent (as it kindof always has been). Programs start up VERY fast (I’ll have to see if this bogs down as I continue to use it) and Warcraft III plays excellent on it. I love the game explorer with downloaded box art.

The 3D interface is nice but the Windows Key-Tab combination that does the weird cascading 3D windows thing is stupid. The opening and closing effects and the slight transparency is great.

So far the experience has been positive. It’s gotten me excited for my job where hopefully I can build a new gaming/music computer and use this current one for Linux full time. That will be great :)
