Vista

Vista is pissing me off. I keep reading articles about their “NEW” features. I don’t see any features I would classify as “NEW”. The big three I keep reading about:

  • 3D Desktop: First of all you don’t even get this with the lowest level of Vista. You have to upgrade at least once to even experience this. Second of all, Mac and Linux have had this for a while now. Both look WAY better than any Vista videos I’ve seen so far. This isn’t new. Windows is the last major OS to get this feature. What took them so long?
  • Desktop Searching: Even XP has this feature if you download the Google Desktop program. Mac has had it in Finder for a long time, and Linux has “Beagle” to handle searching. This again makes Windows the LAST desktop to fully integrate searching.
  • Icon Previews of Documents: Linux has had this for a long time. Since I’m not a Mac user I’m unsure how long it’s been going on over there. Again not new, again Microsoft is LAST in the race for putting this stuff out there.

Everything I’ve ever heard about Vista that was actually going to be new was either going to be terrible (Filtering OpenGL calls through DirectX or their database file system) or is not in the final product for reasons unknown. Reading articles that have anything positive to say about this OS just makes me sick. Copying features is one thing, but when EVERY new feature you have is just a rehash of features already found in other OS’s but then you market it as if those other OS’s don’t exists?

So far Vista is coming across just like IE7 for me. “Oh you have tabs? Great, anything else? No? Then WHY should I switch?”
